Laguna
Photography, acrylic, metallic acrylic and texture paste on canvas
49.5 x 65 cm (framed)
“Laguna” brings photography, painting and space together in a three-dimensional work.
The starting point is a pair of photographs of the same Venetian scene, each with a different plane of focus. On the rear canvas, Venice is in focus while the balustrade in the foreground remains blurred. On the front layer, the focus is reversed: the balustrade appears sharp and is further accentuated with acrylic paint and raised textures.
A cutout in the front canvas opens up a view of Venice behind it. Parts of the photographic imagery are extended and reworked through painting, interweaving photography and paint just as foreground and background intertwine.
The interplay between the two layers changes with the viewing angle. A moment captured in a photograph becomes an image that opens out into the surrounding space.
