“Laguna” brings photography, painting and space together in a three-dimensional work.
The starting point is a pair of photographs of the same Venetian scene, each with a different plane of focus. On the rear canvas, Venice is in focus while the balustrade in the foreground remains blurred. On the front layer, the focus is reversed: the balustrade appears sharp and is further accentuated with acrylic paint and raised textures.
This photograph was taken during a stay on Coconut Island in Thailand. For a brief moment, two gazes met – the bird’s and mine. Out of this quiet encounter, the painting took shape. With acrylics, metallic paints and fine brush textures, I heighten the shimmering plumage and the special presence of this moment.
Snow settles over the ground, covering and transforming it while leaving individual patches visible. Out of the familiar winter landscape emerges an almost abstract composition of shapes, textures and contrasts.
A fragment of the work has been deliberately cut out. Through this opening, the wall behind the painting becomes visible and thus part of the composition. Depending on its colour and surroundings, the effect of the work changes — again and again a new connection arises between the painting and the space around it.
Based on my own photograph, taken where the Baltic and North Seas meet, this work captures a unique moment: for fractions of a second the spray traces a fleeting form into the air — the signature of the wave.
